The Ice House was built by the Chow Family in 1949; it survived the 1960 tidal wave and was deemed critical to the community along with the power plant across the street and the Suisan Fish Business nearby.
Alii Ice Company was established in early 1981 in Keaau. In the fall of 1982 the the business moved from Keaau to the
first location in Hilo in the rear of the Waldron’s feed store, currently the Carpet Isle building on the corner of Kanoelehua
Avenue and Piilani Street. Island wide delivery started in 1984. Then it relocated to its third location on the corner of
Piilani Street and Kalanikoa St. with a ten year lease.
Currently, it is known as Hawaii Island Ice Distributors, doing business as Alii Ice for ice production and The Ice House serving cold treats inspired by locally grown fruits and flavors.
