Ali‘i Ice History
On September 1, 1871, the firm of Martin and Beath began manufacturing manmade ice in Honolulu, and inter island steamers began to import ice on a regular basis to Hilo. In 1893 In an effort to finally bring reliable ice service to Hilo, the trustees of the Hilo Boarding School spent $1,800 to finance and operate an ice plant in Hilo. In its first year of operation, the new ice plant successfully netted a profit of $3,600.
In 1895, the Hilo Electric Company in partnership with the Hilo Boarding School decided to build a new ice making plant with larger machines capable of producing 20 tons of ice per day. Ali’I Ice Company was started in 1956.
